Am I eligible for CAPI?

You may be eligible for the Cash Assistance Payment for Immigrants (CAPI) program if you are age 65 or older, or are blind or disabled, and have been denied Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or State Supplemental Payment (SSP) because of your immigrant status, and you:

  • Have little or no income, and
  • Own items valued at less than $2,000 if you are single, or $3,000 if you are married.

The value of the home you live in is NOT included in the eligibility assessment. However, properties you own in addition to the home you live in, and any property and income you have outside of the United States are included in eligibility considerations.

If you entered the United States with the support of a sponsor, the sponsor and their spouse's income and resources are considered when determining your CAPI eligibility unless you:

  • Are a victim of abuse, a child who is a victim of abuse, or a parent whose child is a victim of abuse; OR
  • Your sponsor cannot meet your basic needs.
