Kinship Care

Am I Eligible?

To become a Kinship Caregiver, you must be:

  • 21 years of age or older,
  • In good health
  • Able to demonstrate an ability and interest in caring for children
  • Able to provide a safe living environment for a child

Home ownership is not a requirement

The important thing is that you have room for a child in a safe living environment and can meet the child's needs. Single, married, divorced, same sex couples, and gay individuals are encouraged to apply.

Qualities of Successful Kinship Caregivers

  • Have a relationship with a child in need, as a relative or extended family member. 
  • Willing to participate with the child in activities to promote development of social and physical skills
  • Able to ensure that children are attending school
  • Willing to allow the child to make decisions regarding the choice of religious belief and religious services
  • Willing to participate with agencies in planning for the child's developmental and medical needs
  • Willing to support the child through family reunification efforts while also committing to becoming a permanent family for the child.
