Welfare-to-Work Facts

If you are receiving CalWORKs cash aid, you are required to participate in the Welfare-to-Work program.  You will be assigned an Employment and Training Specialist who will help you develop your employment goals.

What is my Welfare-to-Work Plan?

Your Welfare-to-Work Plan is very important. The Welfare-to-Work Plan outlines your employment goals, which Welfare-to-Work activities you will participate in and the specific steps you are taking to become self-sufficient.

What are the Work Participation Requirements?

In a two-parent family, parents are required to participate in work related activities for a minimum of 35-hours per week. The 35-hour requirement is a combined hourly requirement for both parents.

In a single-parent family, the parent is required to work a total of 32 hours per week, except when the parent has a disability or needs to care for a child with a serious disability.

What are Supportive Services?

We understand that you may need help with childcare, transportation, and work or training expenses to participate in your Welfare-to-Work activities. Your Employment and Training Specialist will discuss your need for supportive services and explain how we may help pay expenses such as childcare, transportation, work or training needs. We can assist with work or training related costs that are required for your job or to participate in your assigned Welfare-to-Work activities. These costs may include books, tools, uniforms or other special clothing.
