Authorized Hours
You must know ahead of time what tasks and hours are authorized for the consumers by IHSS. You can find this information on the Notice of Action (NOA) mailed to the consumer. You should ask to see this document.
If the consumer has more then one provider, the hours must be assigned as appropriate between them and not go over the hours authorized. If the consumer has you working more then the authorized hours it is the responsiblity of the family to pay the care provider for this time.
IHSS can only pay for hours authorized on the Notice of Action. It is a good idea to understand how the consumer is splitting up the hours so you do not work over the authorized hours. If you need assistance regarding the allocation of hours please call the IHSS Social Worker at (831) 454-4101 or (831) 763-8800.
The consumer must be present for you to work in their home. If the consumer is in the hospital, you are not allowed to work for them at the hospital. Medi-Cal funding pays for the hospital care instead of in-home care while the consumer is hospitalized.
Note: IHSS will not pay you if you work more hours than the IHSS social worker has approved, even if the consumer asks you to work additional hours.
